Every so often, a day unfolds that tests our patience, creativity, and resilience, transforming a routine day into a challenging adventure. Picture this: an unexpected twist on a Thursday, as we wrapped up performing on a Royal Caribbean cruise and embarked on a whirlwind, zigzagging, 17 hour day from Bayonne, NJ, to Newark Airport, home, and then onto Camelback for a much-anticipated show; with an unexpected layover at Wawa. With Gizmo reunited with us, the journey was fraught with surprises, from a deflating experience with a tire to a major tech hiccup during our show. Yet, amidst the chaos, the laughter and goodwill of our audience turned potential disaster into a night to remember. Join us as we recount this wild ride and invite you to be part of our next magical evening, promising unforgettable moments and smiles.

The Unexpected Journey Begins
Our day started at 6:00 am with a tight schedule as we disembarked from a Royal Caribbean cruise in Bayonne, NJ. As "down-liners" who joined mid-cruise, we have to be the first guests to disembark the ship as per U.S. regulations. We quickly cleared customs, picked up our car at Newark International Airport, and headed home to Berks County, PA. This uneventful start to the day gave us a false sense of confidence that the rest of the day would be just as smooth, little did we know our adventure was just beginning.
Gizmo, our dog and some say, the star of the show, had been staying with family and was scheduled to be dropped back to us at home. Our nephew; in returning our performing pooch, encountered serious traffic delays that saw us starting our trek to Camelback beyond our planned departure time. This was just the start of the snowball of challenges.
Roadside Surprises
A Tire Tale
Twenty minutes into our drive, a yellow warning light caught my eye. Our tire pressure was low, and we decided to stop at a nearby Wawa to check it out. It was a good call - air was escaping rapidly from one of our tires. As Jason stepped out of the car he could immediately hear a loud hissing noise coming from the affected tire. It was the front passenger tire and a stone shaped oddly like a Native American arrowhead was embedded into the tire. I could nearly watch the pressure indicator progress in real time from 25psi to 11psi and then 0psi, it should read 45psi.

Luckily, we had a patch kit on hand. Jason got to work, but soon all the air had escaped. We found ourselves stranded just across the parking lot from the air pump, but with too low of pressure to drive even that short distance without damaging the wheel or sidewall. A quick trip into the store for canned air gave us just enough to limp over to the free compressor and fully inflate the tire.
With our unexpected pit stop behind us, we kept a watchful eye on the pressure gauge and made it safely to Camelback without losing any pressure and ready to put on a show. SUCCESS!!
The Show Must Go On
Technical Troubles
The pre-show setup went smoothly, and we opened the doors right on time, things were looking up. We even had enough time to hang a new white board backstage for show notes. Our performance started as usual, but halfway through the second illusion, the music abruptly stopped! Jason, ever the professional, continued the routine without skipping a beat, projecting his voice to compensate for the now dead sound system.
Behind the scenes, Kim and our tech team scrambled to identify and fix the issue. We had to think on our feet, rearranging the show order to work around the technical difficulties.
Super-Audience to the Rescue
As Jason went off stage to take a quick look and make an assessment for himself, Kim took to the stage (despite her phobia of public speaking) to engage with our audience. We discovered that most were vacationing families, and almost all could return for a future show if needed.
Fortunately, Jason's quick thinking saved the day. By having our tech; Logan reroute some equipment, we got the music and microphone working again. While we couldn't fully restore the video parts of our show, our intimate audience setting allowed us to adapt and carry on.
A Night to Remember
As the show neared its end, Jason jokingly asked if it was a full moon. To everyone's amusement, it actually was! Maybe this cosmic coincidence explains our string of mishaps.

Despite the challenges, our audience was incredibly supportive! Their laughter, patience, and enthusiasm turned what could have been a disaster into a unique and memorable experience. One guest even emailed us afterward, praising Jason's improvisation skills and declaring the show well worth the price of admission! She wrote "I paid for a show and I got one!!" lol.
This wild day reminded us of the unpredictable nature of live performances and the importance of adaptability. It also showcased the magic that happens when performers and audience members come together in the spirit of fun and understanding.
